Duke Documents Kyrie Irving's Rehab

Feb 28, 2011 2:51 PM

Duke released a video detailing Kyrie Irving’s rehab regimen.

There is no timetable for Irving's return, but Duke physical therapist Nick Potter says the healing process is going as quickly as could be expected.

"The overall progress is that he's doing fairly well," Potter said. "We knew from the beginning it's a long, gradual process. He's actually right where we expected him to be, if not maybe a step ahead.

"There's still a long way to go, but his body is responding as we hoped it would."

Tar Heels Find Balance With Kendall Marshall At Point Guard

Feb 27, 2011 4:14 PM

The Tarheels have won nine of their last ten games since Kendall Marshall took over the starting point guard job.

Marshall, who is second in the ACC with 5.1 assists per game, has become an extension of Tar Heels coach Roy Williams on the floor.

"He understands time and score better than most people," Williams said. "He understands who's hot and who's not; he understands who's in foul trouble on the other team. He's a thinking man's point guard, with a lot of ability, too."

Not since Ed Cota has UNC boasted a point guard who looks to distribute so much more often than taking his own shot

Seminoles Miss Chris Singleton?s Defense

Feb 26, 2011 1:10 PM

At the time of his injury, Chris Singleton averaged nearly two blocks per game, more than two steals per game, and then there are the intangibles, which are difficult to quantify.

In the 6-9, 220 pound Singleton, Florida State relied upon a player who could guard the perimeter as well as he could the interior. Singleton's versatility often proved his best asset.

"I feel like teammates have got to provide energy," sophomore forward Terrance Shannon said. "I fed off Chris. Once he gets steals and fast breaks and stuff — it gets me pumped. It gets me going. Blocked shots.”

The Seminoles have allowed two opponents to shoot better than 50 percent over the last month.

Zeller?s Consistency Keys Tar Heels

Feb 23, 2011 10:16 AM

Junior big man Tyler Zeller leads the Tar Heels in scoring with 14.5 points per game, ranks ninth in the and rebounding (7.3), and is second in field-goal percentage (.534).

"He's been that little security blanket that every team needs, that you feel like you're going to get good effort from him every night. You feel like you're going to get intelligent play from him every night," Tar Heels coach Roy Williams said. "... He's been having a very solid, very consistent year, and it's been very important to our team, to say the least."

Added NC State coach Sidney Lowe: "What stands out to me with Zeller is the way he approaches the game. His ability to run the floor, his size, his aggressiveness are all positives for them. When I watch him, I can tell there's no messing around. You can tell by his facial expression that he's coming after it, and he's going to get it. When there's a play that needs to be made, he just seems to be there. It's just part of his make-up, and part of the way he is."

Duke's Kyle Singler Contributing Despite Shooting Slump

Feb 22, 2011 4:49 PM

Kyle Singler has averaged just 11 points over his last five contests while making less than a third of his shots.

Despite his shooting slump, Singler remains one of the best defenders and rebounders in the ACC.

The versatile point forward often defends the opposing team's best player, and leads the nation in plus/minus, a statistic that measures how a team performs when a given player is on the floor versus when he is on the bench.

Singler’s plus/minus is 55 points higher than Jon Diebler of Ohio State’s third place total.

Maryland Honors Greivis Vasquez

Feb 22, 2011 1:54 PM

Maryland honored Greivis Vasquez by hanging his No. 21 jersey from the rafters of their home arena.

Vasquez, a rookie with the NBA's Grizzlies, was the ACC player of the year in 2009-10 and is the only player in league history to have at least 2,000 points, 700 assists and 600 rebounds.

Maryland does not retire numbers, but Vasquez is now one of only 17 members of the men's program to have his name hanging from the ceiling of the arena.
